Brazilian guitarist, composer, percussionist, and educator Pepe Barcellos from Rio de Janeiro has traveled the world leading Brazilian guitar and percussion workshops, providing interactive experiences for young learners. Barcellos has released two albums of original songs, composed music for film, theater, dance, and animation, and published and presented music education research at major international and national events. Over the last 15 years, he has toured globally, leading Brazilian music workshops in France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, the United Kingdom, Bermuda, and the USA, creating engaging and memorable experiences for students. In May 2023, Barcellos earned a Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning from Georgia State University. He has built a research career focused on musical creativity, student voice, and songwriting pedagogy. Currently, he is a Lecturer in Music Education at Penn State University, where he has presented research, shared his teaching practices, and performed at NAfME, MISTEC, GMEA, the Oxford Symposium, ANPPOM, ISME Latin American, and APME. Since relocating to State College, Pepe Barcellos has performed at prestigious local venues such as Elk Creek Cafe, Boal City Brewing, Chumley's, Woskob Family Gallery, and Moonstock.
Evelyn Bookhammer (Traditional and Suzuki Cello) loves teaching both Suzuki and traditional cello to any age of student. She is versatile and creative in helping students to be successful and to love the cello. Evelyn has had many very small children, lots of school aged and many adult students through the years. Ms. Bookhammer believes all have inborne talent that can be developed in a positive environment, with the proper nurturing. She started cello with Marco Branda in Altoona, and then Evelyn studied cello at Mansfield University, Elmira College, and Penn State University with Irwin Borodkin, Leonard Feldman, and Kim Cook.She has performed with Elmira Symphony, Juniata College Symphony, Celtic Classic, and Altoona Symphony since high school. Ms. Bookhammer is certified through book 5 in Suzuki Repertoire, through book 7 overview by the American Suzuki Association. Evelyn has been teaching Suzuki cello in the State College Suzuki Program since 1989. She also teaches in her home studio at Alexandria, PA, and formerly at Juniata College. Evelyn is blessed by teaching cello.
Cordelia-Marie Ceres (violin) earned her Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in Violin Performance at Penn State under Dr. Max Zorin and is currently pursuing a Professional Performance Certificate, also at Penn State. Cordelia-Marie discovered her passion for music through her own experiences as a student in the Suzuki Method and has found a deeper appreciation for Suzuki by returning to the method from a teaching perspective. She has studied the Suzuki approach under Christie Felsing and has experience leading group classes and teaching lessons. She is excited to share the Suzuki philosophy with her own students. Outside of teaching, she works as a freelance musician, playing in various symphony and pit orchestras, weddings, and other venues.
Betha Christopher (Early Childhood Coordinator) is a fully licensed Musikgarten teacher, was a National Musikgarten Teacher Trainer and a Level I Certified ECMMA member. She earned a Bachelor of Music from DePauw University in Indiana, and a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Boston University. "Because I can see the wonderful benefits of music in my own children, I am delighted to offer Musikgarten & Music Together programs to families at The Music Academy! I bring over 20 years of experience with young children, as a children's choir director, nanny, nursery director, preschool music teacher, and mother. I hope that your family will join me soon to sing, dance and experience music together." Betha is also the Early Childhood Coordinator.
Originally from Cayey, Puerto Rico, cellist Valeria S. Cotto López has been playing the cello for 14 years. She is currently pursuing a Master’s in Cello Performance at Penn State University, where she studies under Kim Cook and serves as a graduate teaching assistant. A passionate chamber musician, Valeria has performed in countries such as France, Turkey, Puerto Rico, and across different states in the U.S., including California, Pennsylvania and others. As a performer, her goal is to continually grow as an artist, embracing challenges that push her technical and musical boundaries and make an impact through her music. With 7 years of teaching experience, she has worked with students of all ages, from young children to older adults. As a teacher, she aspires to guide and support her students to develop not only their technical skills but also a love and appreciation for music. Valeria believes in creating a supportive and encouraging learning environment where each student feels valued and motivated to reach their full potential. Approaching teaching with patience, flexibility, and an emphasis on individualized instruction, tailoring lessons to each student’s unique strengths, challenges, and musical goals.
Marty Coyle, tenor, received his Bachelor of Music degree in Voice from The Pennsylvania State University and his Master of Music degree in Voice from The Juilliard School. For many years, he performed regularly with the Metropolitan Opera Chorus and as a member of the Saint Thomas Choir of Gentlemen and Boys at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue. He has also sung with Opera Theatre Saint Louis, Toledo Opera, and Aspen Opera (in conjunction with the Aspen Music Festival). Outside of the U.S., he performed with the Wexford Festival Opera in Ireland and in Ostrava, Czechia as part of New Opera Days Ostrava (NODO). Marty has also regularly collaborated with ensembles such as the Choir of Trinity Wall Street, American Classical Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, S.E.M. Ensemble, and the Vox Vocal Ensemble. He studied voice with W. Stephen Smith, Vinson Cole, Richard Kennedy, and Louima Lilite. Marty currently resides in Port Matilda. He was most recently seen as the tenor soloist in Camille Saint-Saëns’ ‘Oratorio de Noel’ in a joint concert with Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra and SCAHS Master Singers, conducted by Erik Clayton. When he isn’t teaching voice, singing with the State College Choral Society, or cataloging music scores for Penn State Libraries, he’s typically at home building Legos with his kids.
Brandy Davis (Clarinet, Saxophone) holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from the Pennsylvania State University. She has been teaching clarinet and saxophone lessons for 14 years. Brandy is also an active freelance musician with experience in performing a wide variety of music with various groups. Some of these groups include the Nittany Valley and Altoona Symphonies, FUSE Productions, Singing Onstage Studios, Penn State Centre Stage, Chicago the Musical tour, P & J Productions, Moshannon Valley YMCA Student Youth Theatre Program, Bavarian Stompers, and the State College Area Municipal Band.
Nicole Felker (Traditional and Suzuki Violin and Viola) is a graduate of Butler University with a Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance under the tutelage of Richard Auldon Clark, and The Hartt School with a Masters in Viola Performance under the tutelage of Rita Porfiris. She is currently pursuing a Performance Practice Certificate at Penn State University under the study of Tim Deighton.
During her time at Butler, Ms. Felker was part of the Butler Symphony Orchestra and the Butler Ballet Orchestra, preparing major symphonic works, concertos and ballets. She was violist in her Butler based quartet, performing works by Mozart, Sibelius, Shostakovich, and more. While in Indianapolis, she worked with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra as an alumni and violin/viola instructor for beginning students.
At The Hartt School, she acted as a rotating principal violist within the Hartt Symphony Orchestra. As a chamber musician, she has premiered several commissioned works for solo and group settings and regularly performed with her piano quintet. She has performed in several solo masterclasses for Kayla Williams, Amber Archibald, Ann Rogan, Masumi Per Rostad, Amadi Azikiwe, Nicole Dival, and Tim Deighton. Ms. Felker has also performed in chamber masterclasses for The Aizuri Quartet, The Cassatt Quartet, Bang on a Can, and The Juilliard Quartet.
Ms. Felker was trained in violin/viola Suzuki pedagogy through Book 4 at the Hartt School under Teri Einfeldt. From this extensive training and her own experience as a teacher at Summit Studios, Ms. Felker has developed a teaching style that caters to the individual, exploring the methods that work best for the student. She also encourages learning a variety of styles, from traditional to folk, as well as exploring music outside of the general curriculum.
Brooke Greybush (Piano) is delighted to teach piano at The Music Academy. She welcomes students of all ages to take individual piano lessons or group piano lessons. Brooke holds dual B.A. degrees in Music and Psychology from Susquehanna University and her Masters in Music in Piano Pedagogy from Temple University. Teaching positions include Susquehanna University’s preparatory program, Settlement Music School in Philadelphia, and The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts in Clearwater, Florida. Since 2010, Brooke has enjoyed teaching individual piano lessons, group piano and early childhood music classes at the Music Academy. Brooke has an interactive teaching method and adapts to each student’s learning style. She encourages families to be involved with their child’s musical journey. Piano lessons focus on technique, sound, theory, analysis, memorization and creativity. Brooke looks forward to exploring the world of music with her students while enhancing their everyday lives with creativity, discipline, and joy.
Cathy Collinge Herrera (Flute, Baroque Flute, World Flutes, Recorder) enjoys an international performing and teaching career spanning four continents. Her Doctorate in Flute Performance and Certificate in World Music have led her down many unique as well as traditional orchestral and chamber music paths. She has served on university and conservatory faculties in Australia, Peru and the U.S. While a Fulbright scholar to Peru, she was Principal Flute and soloist with the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional, and a founder of the Latin American Flute Festival scene.. An artistic ambassador for U.S. Embassies, Cathy has premiered multiple works, including her own compositions, in the U.S. and abroad featured at music festivals, such as the Bournemouth (England) Music Festival; Música Para Todos festival in La Paz, Bolivia; Festivales Internacionales de Flautistas in Peru and El Centro del Mundo Quito and Loja, Ecuador; and touring throughout the Americas with the Cornell University Men’s Glee Club, the Herrera-Register flute and guitar duo, Camerata Amistad trio, and the TrioArts Project (a collaboration of music, dance and the spoken word). Her duo From the Heart, shares the intrigue of world flutes and world percussion through Free Improvisation.
Founder of The Flutopia Initiative charitable organization with the motto ¨flutists inspiring musicians to change the world, one concert at a time¨, she has worked locally to benefit hometown residents with ¨Play it Forward¨ concerts and the ¨Flutopia 5k!¨ featuring musicians along the route. Across the U.S. she organizes Flutopia Initiative benefit and educational concerts in the host city of each National Flute Association convention, and on an international level has raised funds and provided musical instruments for music students in Guatemala, Haiti and Peru, as well as funds for Doctors Without Borders. Cathy is a Rostered Artist for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and a multiple performance and workshop presenter, as well as International Liaison Committee Chair for the National Flute Association. Currently she is flutist and piccoloist with the Penns Woods Music Festival, and Altoona Symphony Orchestra, and Principal Flute with Nittany Valley Symphony and New Ground Orchestra Festival. Concerto soloist with both the Nittany Valley and Altoona Symphonies, Cathy highlighted the colors of C flute, piccolo, and alto flute in the premiere of her concerto “Celestial Suite” with the Altoona Symphony in March, 2025. She has recorded 2 albums: “Doorways” with From the Heart Duo, and “Perlas Hispánicas” with Camerata Amistad. Her compositions are published by ALRY and her book, “It’s Performance Day! Success in the Spotlight” by Theodore Presser. An enthusiastic teacher, she maintains a private studio, is Flute Lecturer at Juniata College and Flute Instructor at The Music Academy. Antwan Hill (trumpet) is currently a student at Penn State pursuing a Professional Performance Certificate under Dr. George Carpten. Prior to this, he received a Bachelor's of Music from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a Masters in Trumpet Performance from Penn State University. As Graduate Assistant for the Trumpet Studio, Antwan taught trumpet methods, offered private lessons to non-majors, and performed in the PSU Philharmonia, Center Dimensions in Big Band, and the Penn State Graduate Brass Quintet.
Native to Cincinnati, Ohio, Antwan's musicianship has taken him internationally, playing in festivals held at the Sydney Opera House, and touring Ireland with the Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble. More recently, he has played with local orchestras like The Nittany Valley Symphony and the Altoona Symphony. As an instructor, he has performed and held masterclasses at The PA Governor's School of the Arts and Humanities, State College Area High School, and Williamsport High School as a part of the Penn State Graduate Brass Quintet.
Antwan's teachers include Dr. Michael Mergen, Ashley Hall, Dr. Langston Fitzgerald, Steve Pride, and Dr. George Carpten.
Michael Holtzapple (violin) earned his Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance, graduating in 2024. He is currently pursuing a Master’s in Violin Performance at Penn State, under the guidance of Max Zorin. At UNT he led the opera orchestra as a principal player and now rotates as the concertmaster/principal 2nd violin of the Penn State Philharmonic Orchestra. Over his 15 years of playing experience he has performed multiple solo and chamber recitals. With orchestras he has been able to perform in Philadelphia, Orlando, New Orleans, and at Rice University.
By starting the violin in Suzuki group classes, Michael saw the results that come from a good teacher and an encouraging environment for young musicians. Now, in his own teaching, he strives to promote proper technique that reduces tension and facilitates ease of playing with his students.
Hunter Horne (French Horn, Trumpet) earned his Bachelor's of Music in Music Education from Susquehanna University and is currently completing his Master's of Music in Horn Performance at the Pennsylvania State University, serving as the horn studio's Graduate Teaching Assistant.
His previous teaching positions include Susquehanna University's preparatory program, Danville Area Middle School's interim band director and general music teacher, Danville Area High School, Lewisburg Area High School, and Montgomery Area High School's Marching Band Staffs, and private lesson teacher to students in the Susquehanna Valley region. He has performed with the Penn Central Wind Band, the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, and various collegiate ensembles and chamber groups at Susquehanna University, Penn State University, Bucknell University, Bloomsburg University, and Lycoming College. He is a member of the Penn State Graduate Brass Quintet and the Lycoming College Faculty Woodwind Quintet, "Sheshequin Winds."
Hunter has performed at festivals and conferences around the United States, including the International Horn Symposium in Harrisonburg, Virginia, the International Women's Brass Conference in Hartford, Connecticut, the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association All-State Conference in Pocono Manor, Pennsylvania, and Longy School of Music's contemporary chamber music festival, Divergent Studio, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He has taught masterclasses and performed on tour around Pennsylvania and South Carolina with the Penn State Graduate Brass Quintet. While at Susquehanna University, he studied abroad in Prague, Czech Republic.
Hunter's primary teachers include Dr. Sarah Schouten, Prof. Lisa Bontrager, and Prof. Christi Smith.
Mark Minnich (Suzuki Violin) holds a B.M. in Violin Performance from Bowling Green State University, as well as an M.M. in Violin Performance and an M.A. in Music Theory and History from Penn State. Mark has performed in the United States, Canada, Germany, Austria, Poland, China, Greece, and Tanzania, and has played as soloist with the Toledo Youth Orchestra, the Toledo International Youth Orchestra, the Firelands Symphony, and the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra. An enthusiast of diverse musical styles, he has participated in jazz combos, Latin rock bands, new music ensembles, string quartets, and fiddle camps, as well as with the Mannheim Steamroller orchestra, the world tour of Chicago: The Musical, and Grammy award winning pianist Billy Childs. Mark performs as concertmaster with the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra and with his wife in the innovative violin duo Revamped. He holds positions teaching violin, viola, chamber ensembles, and group classes at the State College Suzuki Program and the Grier School.
Sally Williams Minnich (Traditional and Suzuki Violin) is an avid freelance performer, music educator, arranger, and composer. She has appeared as a soloist at the Electronic Music Midwest Festival, the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra, the Altoona Symphony, The Cleveland Pops Orchestra, and The Williamsport Symphony Orchestra. She is a founding member of the internationally-known violin duo, Revamped, and has invented extended techniques for the violin. Williams Minnich is also the first violinist and founding member of the Allegria String Quartet which most notably performed with Grammy Award-winning artist Billy Childs. Williams Minnich studied as a preparatory student at the Cleveland Institute of Music and holds bachelor's degrees in violin performance/music composition and a master’s degree in violin performance from Bowling Green State University. She also holds a master's degree in music education from Pennsylvania State University. She has had the privilege of studying with violin pedagogues David Russell, Vasile Beluska, and James Lyon.
Jesse Moore (Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, and Bass Guitar) is an active performer and songwriter, specializing in electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and bass guitar. He holds a bachelor's degree in guitar performance (rock, blues, funk, and jazz fusion) from Berklee School of Music and a certificate from CAP21 Musical Theatre Conservatory in NYC. Jesse regularly appears as a pit musician for shows in the area and enjoys a support role with the Penn State School of Music. He began learning the guitar at the age of 13 and continues to pursue new areas of growth as a musician, composer, and educator.
Victoria Petrosky (Piano, Music Theory, Solfege, Accompaniment) was trained as a child at The Moscow Children's Music School #36, with her beloved piano teacher who was a student of Vladimir Sofronitsky. Victoria is a graduate of the College of Music of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory , with a B.A. in music theory, and of Gnessin's Russian Academy of Music in Moscow, where she obtained a Master 's degree in music theory and piano pedagogy. At the Gnessin Academy Victoria studied piano performance with Galina Turkina (of the Turkiny piano duo). Victoria has been teaching for over twenty years, first at the Moscow Children's Music School and later at the Main Line Music Academy near Philadelphia. She has been active as an accompanist, including the Bolshoi Theater Choreography College in Moscow, church and concert choirs in State College, musical theater productions in State College. Victoria teaches piano to students of all ages, beginner through advanced levels. She is an active member of the Central Pennsylvania Music Teachers Association, where she serves as a co-chair for the Phyllis Triolo Music Competition.
Lisa Raymond (Traditional Violin and Viola) has violin performance degrees from The Juilliard School and Yale University. She has performed with many orchestras in the United States, among them are The Albany Symphony, The Syracuse Symphony, The Concerto Soloists Chamber Orchestra, The Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, The Nittany Valley Symphony, The Penns Woods Festival, and The Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra. She has been guest concertmaster with The Nittany Valley Symphony and The Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra as well as principal 2nd violin with The Nittany Valley Symphony. She has given many recitals and has been a member of numerous chamber ensembles, and was a founding member of The Ithaca Trio. Lisa has been a violin and viola teacher for over 35 years, and tailors her instruction to each student and their unique needs. The emphasis is on building technique, while at the same time fostering a love of music and the desire to be the best musician that each student can be.
Cathy Scafidi (Piano) holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music. She has been teaching individual piano lessons for over thirty years to students that are beginner through advanced levels. Ms. Scafidi has been teaching at The Music Academy since 2000 and also teaches at Juniata College.
Dan Shevock (Percussion, Marimba, Drum-Set, Jazz) is a creative musician, percussionist, and philosopher. As a musician, he was the primary drummer for the Ray Ryan Jazz Band in Pittsburgh, PA for a decade, performing 20-30 engagements each year at festivals, parades, parks, and events. Since 2012 he has performed primarily as a vibraphonist in Central, PA. Dan was a jazz artist in residence at Penn State Altoona, where he continues to teach, and he performs, writes, and arranges music with a focus on ecological jazz and free improvision. Dan has also performed as a poet since 2020. As an author, his books focus on the intersection of music and ecology. In his free time, Dan enjoys gardening, hiking, running, and swimming. Dan has degrees from Clarion University of Pennsylvania (BSEd), Towson University (MS), and Penn State (PhD).
Laurie Troyer (Early Childhood Classes) An experienced educator, Laurie taught full time in public schools for 14 years and has also enjoyed teaching part time in community and church settings. Laurie received a B.M. degree in Music Education from Grove City College and an M.A. in French from Middlebury College. She holds Pennsylvania state teaching certification in Music Education, grades Pre-K through 12, and is a certified Musikgarten teacher. “I have seen so much growth in my own daughter through Musikgarten. I am excited by the range and quality of Early Childhood Music classes at The Music Academy."
Emily Wertz, soprano, is a versatile singer and dedicated teacher with a passion for both classical and musical theater repertoire. She loves equipping and empowering singers to grow in joy and confidence, using their natural voices freely and healthily while developing their knowledge, musicianship, and performance skills.
As a performer, some of her favorite roles include Gretel and the Witch in Hansel and Gretel (Humperdinck), Lucy in The Telephone (Menotti), and Amalia Balash in She Loves Me (Bock and Harnick). With over 20 years of private teaching experience, Emily currently teaches voice at Lycoming College and serves as interim conductor of The Oriana Singers, Penn State's treble choir.
She is also a certified Go + Tell Gals coach, providing one-on-one life and faith coaching for women both locally and online. Her past roles include teaching in the public schools and serving as artistic director of the Williamsport Youth Choir from 2013 to 2020.
Emily holds a B.S. in Music Education, an M.M. in Voice Performance and Pedagogy, and a Professional Performance Certificate, all from The Pennsylvania State University. She is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the American Choral Directors Association.
