World Rhythms

Instructor: Christiana Usenza
Ages: 13+
Start date: Sept 18
12 weeks
Time: TBD
Level: beginner to advanced

This class is for students with all levels of musical experience (teens and adults) who are interested in learning the skills required of an ensemble, such as: collaboration & listening (& rocking out!). By focusing on African & Latin music, the students will learn about the foundations of rhythm, percussion technique & creativity. The group will start by learning a piece called “Gahu” which is from the Ewe culture in Ghana. This piece has five parts that play simultaneously and each student will learn to play and rotate all five parts. The teacher will soon introduce Afro-Cuban pieces & other world rhythms, and eventually improvisation. The class is very supportive and fun and focuses on listening & working together to create amazing music.

*A limited number of drums will be available for use in class. For those interested in purchasing a drum, guidance will be provided.

You Can Ukulele Too!

Instructor: Christiana Usenza
Ages: 13+
Start date: Sept 18
12 weeks
Time: TBD
Level: beginner

This class is for beginners (ages 13 to infinity) who want to learn to playfully play ukulele music in a fun and participatory group setting. Each class will begin with a short lesson on chords & strumming patterns, and the bulk of the time will be spent playing songs (rock, folk, country, blues, jazz, pop, and world music). The teacher will provide songbooks and the group will rotate around a circle giving each student a chance to pick a song to learn that day. The students will be encouraged to sing along while doing so. It will be a low-pressure environment for each individual to join in only on what they feel comfortable with or compelled to do. Mostly it will be energizing to learn together and to make music with the group.

*Students will need to bring their own ukulele (soprano, concert, or tenor). If you have questions more info is available.
