Beginning Adult Piano Group - 9 weeks

This course is designed for students with no or very little experience; a clear idea of how to approach and learn a piano piece will be presented. Successful completion will build the student's capacity: students can apply the principles learned to facilitate self learning of beginner repertoire. Should students require more advanced instruction, another nine-week session may be added that includes more advance rhythmical and technical patterns


Week 1: Topography of the keyboard; names of the keys
Week 2: Characteristics of a music sound, relationship between sound and a note; descriptive properties of a note (pitch, length)
Week 3: Simple rhythmical patterns in simple meters (2/4 3/4 4/4) including quarter, half, dotted half, whole notes and respective rests
Week 4: Learning notes above middle C in treble clef; simple tunes in C position and above for right hand
Week 5: Learning notes below middle C in bass clef; simple tunes in C position and below for left hand
Week 6: Grand staff; learning music for both hands in stepwise and skipwise motion
Week 7: Introduction to intervals
Week 8: Working on developing eye-mind-finger-keyboard coordination
Week 9: Triads and incorporation of them into playing simple tunes

Irene Bernstein holds a Bachelor of Music, Kharkov, Ukraine and Masters of Music in Theory and Musicology, Saint Petersburg Conservatory, Russia. During a career that spans 38 years of teaching, Ms. Bernstein has developed her own system of training from young beginners through advanced piano students. Her teaching approach is a melting pot of European, American and Suzuki methods. Bernstein is a solo performer, and may be heard at The Music Academy's annual Faculty Recital.

It's Never Too Late to Learn to Sing PART 1 (Session 2)- 5 weeks

Each week will focus on a specific style of music: classical, jazz, Broadway and popular. Listening, singing, vocal technique and above all, lots of fun..


Week 1: clear, concise explanation of proper vocal coordination
questions and answers
vocal exercises and songs (repertoire will include Telemann, Mozart)
listening - classical choral and solo
discussion of classical singing
Week 2: expanded exercises
review and add new repertoire (Porter, Kern)
listening - if you like Ella, you'll enjoy this
discussion of jazz style
Week 3: Solfege and how it relates to vocal training
continuation of exercises and singing (addition of Broadway pieces to repertoire)
listening and musical theatre history
Week 4: popular songs (interesting, unusual fare, including one by Bonnie Raitt)
discussion of voice types
Week 5: PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER AND TAKING IT ON THE ROAD!!

Ms. Levin holds a Masters of Fine Arts from Cleveland Institute and Voice Therapy Certification from Boston Conservatory, where she studied with Blair McClosky. Ms. Levin has sung with Cleveland Opera Theatre, Harrisburg Civic Opera and in concert at The Whitaker Center. Student accomplishments range from acceptance to Philadelphia College of the Arts to Camp Broadway, New York City. Ms. Levin is organist at Sacred Heart Church in Lewistown.

Never Too Late to Sing PART TWO will build on learning from Never Too Late To Sing PART ONE


Week 1: Continuation of vocal exercises, we will add a little Latin to the classical repertoire
Week 2:A different kind of Latin - Jobim and friends!
Week 3:More advanced vocal Techniques and completely voluntary individual instruction
Week 4: Church music, traditional and gospel
Week 5: Performance of all of the music we've studied

Beginning Pilates and Ballet - 8 Weeks

Instructor: Suzie Rothgeb
Tuition: $95
Wednesdays 3:00 - 4:00 PM
March 24, 31, April 7, 14, 21, 28, May 5, 12, 2010

Each class will begin with gentle Pilates exercises and stretching designed to increase the strength and flexibility of major muscle groups.  The second part of the class will focus on classical ballet technique, including learning basic movements from the Vaganova syllabus. The class is progressive and based on the needs and abilities of the students enrolled. It’s never too late to learn to dance and Pilates and ballet can be a great way to explore movement!

Please bring a Pilates or Yoga mat.

Suzie Rothgeb trained under Andrea Hill and Vicky McQuaide at the Ballet Theatre of Central Pa. for nine years. She danced with their company for six years and held soloist and lead roles in the Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty and Paquita among others. Ms. Rothgeb has also danced with Light of the World Ballet in Syracuse, NY. Ms. Rothgeb has over eight years of experience teaching children, teens and adults.
